Why Is Refrigerant So Expensive?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has put a limit on the use of R-22 refrigerant. In some units, this cools your house during the spring and summer months. The EPA controls production of the refrigerant known as R-22 and now has a limit how much each gas manufacturer and importer can produce or import in a given time. The production and use of R-22 is slowly being phased out. This reduction has caused R-22 prices to sky-rocket.
As a consumer, you should be aware of what type of refrigerant your HVAC unit requires. If you have a system that uses R-22, you may have difficulty finding a technician to do repairs this summer. Suppliers are having a hard time keeping some in stock, and R-22 systems that have refrigerant leaks cannot be recharged without the refrigerant.
