How To Save Money & Energy With Your Ceiling Fan

Why don't you put those ceiling fans to good use? Most homes have them and if used correctly, can save you money on your monthly utility bills. Most fans only use about as much power as a 100 watt light bulb. Who can say no to saving money?

During the Spring and Fall Months:

This is the time of year your fans save you the most energy. Instead of running your HVAC unit, try turning it off, opening some windows, and let the fans do their work! If you are wanting to cool off, make sure the fan is running in a counter-clockwise direction. This way the air is being pushed down, and blows on you.

During the Summer Months:

Ceiling fans are also big energy savers in the summer months as well. Make sure the fans are spinning in a counter-clockwise direction to have the air circulate down. While fans do not lower the temperature of the air, it does make the room feel cooler by providing a circulatory breeze. This allows you to set the thermostat at a higher temperature, with the room still feeling cooler, while your HVAC unit gets to work less. Effective circulation can make you feel up to 8 degrees cooler, and reduce air conditioning bills by up to 40%. If you are leaving your house for extended periods of time, turn the thermostat up. While no one is home, it makes sense not use your system.

During the Winter Months:

Remember: Warm air is lighter than cool air. Every room has layers of air with varying degrees of temperature, the warmest air near the ceiling. During winter, run your ceiling fan in a clockwise direction. This pushes the warm air up against the ceiling and then down the walls, gently recirculating warm air throughout a room without causing a chilling breeze. This has been proven to lower heating costs by up to as much as 10% by offesetting the HVAC work load. If you are leaving your house for extended periods of time, turn the thermostat down. While no one is home, it makes sense to not use your system.
